Getting Started

  • PenReader Start
Launch any application where you can enter textual information. Tap input method icon contoured with blue in the figure (in this case it is PenReader icon), then tap triangle icon contoured with red in the figure and choose PenReader from the list of available input methods:

While using PenReader, you will see this icon:
It shows current language context. You can switch over contexts using two methods: by pressing the current language context icon until the required context appears or by using switch context macro (bold dot shows drawing start point). To choose another context from the list of chosen contexts, do the following: tap and hold the current context icon. Then you will see a pop-up menu which consists of available contexts.

The active context is marked with a tick. Choose a new context in this menu.

  • PenReader Settings
In PenReader settings box you can change some recognition options and interface settings. To open settings box, tap triangle icon at the bottom of the screen, then tap Options in the list and press Options button in the appeared box. Recognition Tab

Using this tab, you can adjust the following settings:

  • Recognition Delay. This function allows to set recognition time-out ranging from 0.5 to 3 seconds. While you are writing, the text remains on the screen, thus you are able to write entire words and phrases, but as soon as you stop writing, PenReader starts the recognition process.

  • Recognize Spaces Automatically. If this option is enabled, PenReader recognizes spaces between words automatically, if the gap between the two characters equals or exceeds the character width. Thus, there is no need to draw a special macro to make spaces.

  • Add Space at the End of Time-out. If this option is enabled, PenReader adds a space at the end of each time-out automatically.

To gain access to the additional settings, press Advanced. The appeared window contains the following items:

  • Copy-book. Press Adjust to adopt PenReader to your handwriting. Choose required type of characters in the character set and choose the character you want to adjust. Below you will see character spelling variants. Choose one most corresponding to your handwriting and press Often/Rarely depending on whether you use this spelling variant often or rarely. Press Never to exclude this character spelling variant from the list if you do not use it. Press Default to initialize settings.

  • Dictionaries. Use build-in dictionaries for more accurate recognition. You can also add new words to the dictionaries. To add/delete a word, press Adjust, choose the dictionary language and select Use Dictionary check box . To add a word, press Add and then press Done. To quit the dialog, press Quit. To delete a word, press Delete.

  • Prompt. PenReader shows pop-up prompts, which contain recognition variants for words and characters. Use pop-up menu to choose one of four prompt variants. Dictionary language should be the same as the current language context.

Using Macros

To reduce the time of writing and to automate command execution, use the following macros:

  • spacebar – the Space macro. This macro is a horizontal bar which is drawn from left to right, and then from right to left, with a minimum angle between the two lines (The dot shows drawing start point). If Recognize Spaces Automatically function in the Recognition tab is disabled, use this macro to separate the words. The function is enabled by default after installing PenReader.
  • – the Dash macro (“-”). Draw it from left to right.
  • – the Enter macro. Use it to go to the next line.
  • – the Backspace macro. You can use it to delete not only separate characters, but also words and phrases. Mark the characters which you want to be deleted and draw the macro. This macro should be used in a separate time-out.
  • – the Tabulation macro functionally corresponds to the Tabulation button on the keyboard. Two variants are supported. While drawing this macro, the vertical bar should be 2-3 times longer than the horizontal elements.
  • – the Shift macro. It works like the Shift button on the keyboard. The Shift macro is a vertical line drawn bottom-up before the letter: for example, to get capital “A” you should write  .
  • – the CapsLock macro. Use it to enable the uppercase mode. This macro is a vertical line drawn from the bottom to the top and back (the dot shows the beginning of the line). Repeated macro switches off the uppercase mode.
  • – the context switch macro. You should write it in a separate time-out.
